In the Indian Sanatan tradition, the guru is given an extremely high place. In the scriptures, a guru is not only considered a teacher, but also one who imparts knowledge, removes the darkness of ignorance, and guides one to reach God.
According to the scriptures, the teacher holds an extremely important place in life, because it is the teacher who dispels the darkness of ignorance and gives the light of knowledge. The Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita state that true knowledge and self-realization are not possible without a teacher. A teacher is not only one who imparts education, but also one who shows the right path, shapes character and serves as a medium to reach God. Therefore, the guru is considered equivalent to God, and to achieve success and salvation in life, the guidance of a guru is considered necessary. The guru shapes our thoughts, behavior, and personality and helps us understand the difference between right and wrong. Hence, the importance of a guru in life is very great, as he is the one who leads us towards success, virtues, and ultimately spiritual progress.
🕉️ 1. The guru is considered equivalent to God
The most famous verse:
Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwarah.
Guru is the direct supreme Brahman, to that revered guru salutations.
👉 Its meaning is:
The guru is Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Mahesh (the destroyer). The guru is the direct supreme Brahman.
📖 2. Importance of a Guru in the Upanishads
It is said in the Upanishads that knowledge cannot be attained without a guru.
“tadvijñānārthaṃ sa gurumevābhigacchet”
👉 (Mundaka Upanishad)
Meaning: To attain true knowledge, a person must go to a guru.
⚡ 3. Role of the Guru in the Bhagavad Gita
In the Bhagavad Gita, while giving knowledge to Arjuna, Lord Krishna said:
“tadvijñiṣyatē praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā…” (Chapter 4, Verse 34)
👉 Meaning: Acquire knowledge from a guru through humility, questioning, and service.
🔥 4. Gurus dispel the darkness of ignorance
The meaning of “Gu” is darkness and “Ru” is light.
👉 A guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance and gives the light of knowledge.

According to scriptures:
Without a guru, self-knowledge remains incomplete
It is the guru who shows the right path
Only through the guidance of a guru is liberation (Moksha) attained

In Ramayana and Mahabharata also, serving a guru is considered the highest duty.
